Abstract : The total phenol content of dormant apical buds of 24 mango cultivars collected in Apr.-May showed a strong inverse relationship with tree size and vigour. In trees of cv. Alphonso which had received soil drenches of different concentrations of paclobutrazol in the previous season, a high total phenol content of the apical buds was associated with the reduction in tree growth caused by paclobutrazol; phenol content increased with increasing paclobutrazol concentration.
