Abstract : The Hindustan centre of genetic diversity as designated by Vavilov has linkage/contiguity with the central Asian, Indo-Chinese-Indonesian and Chinese-Japanese regions. As many as 190 species of economic importance are indigenous to the Indian centre, 109 of which are fruits. The subject is discussed under the following headings: indigenous resources (regions of variability, variability in fruits, and germplasm surveys and collections); introduction of fruits (early and recent introductions, and introduction needs, including commercial and under-exploited fruits); conservation; and utilization. Many fruits are considered, including: almonds, bananas, Citrus, grapes, jackfruits (Artocarpus heterophyllus), mango (Mangifera indica), papaya (Carica papaya [pawpaws]) and pomegranate (Punica granatum).
