Quality monitoring of Northern Territory mangoes. Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Abstract : The arrival of 6 truck loads of Northern Territory (NT) mangoes (2 to Melbourne, 1 to Brisbane and 3 to Sydney) was monitored. Each load comprised fruits from several different growers. Samples were compared against the Class 1 standard for mangoes. Refrigerated transport generally performed well, with all loads arriving in good condition. Air temperatures in refrigerated trucks were 15-18°C at the start of the journey and rose to 17-26°, with fruit temperatures in most consignments ranging from 18 to 22°. The quality of 72% of samples met the Class 1 standard. Most defects developed after packing and the most common defect was skin browning. Quality and presentation were variable with the best NT fruit comparable to the best Queensland fruit. In spite of some quality advantages, Irwin and other cultivars did not realize the prices achieved for Kensington Pride.
