Abstract : This book was first published under the title Fruits of India: tropical and subtropical. It was updated in 1990 and the title changed to reflect the change in content, a number of fruit crops widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions, but not popular in India, being included. Thirty-one chapters cover the composition and uses, origin and distribution, species and cultivars, soil and climate, area and production, propagation, cultivation, growth habit, flowering, pollination and fruit set, pests and diseases, harvesting, yield, storage and ripening, and breeding and varietal improvement of individual crops: mango, citrus, banana, grape, pineapple, guava, pawpaw, coconut, cashew, Litchi, custard apple (Annona spp.), persimmon, macadamia nut, longan, avocado, sapota (Manilkara zapota), ber (Ziziphus spp.), pomegranate, jackfruit (Artocarpus spp.), fig, date palm, passion fruit, loquat, rambutan, bael (Aegle marmelos), jamun (Syzygium cumini), aonla (Phyllanthus spp.), durian, phalsa (Grewia asiatica), mangosteen, and carambola. The final chapter covers the postharvest handling of fresh fruits: physiological and biochemical aspects, harvesting and field handling, packaging, transportation, marketing, and storage aspects.
