Chemical weeding as a labour saving device in management of fruit nurseries.

Abstract : In field trials conducted at Hessaraghatta, Karnataka, the effects were evaluated of pre-em. diuron, atrazine, fluchloralin, butachlor, alachlor, oxadiazon and thiobencarb, applied at 2.0-3.0 kg/ha, and oxyfluorfen, applied at 0.5-1.0 kg, for the control of weeds in fruit nurseries. The most problematic weeds were Cynodon dactylon, Cyperus rotundus, Euphorbia hirta, Parthenium hysterophorus and Mimosa pudica. Fluchloralin at 2.0 kg was recommended for use in papaya [pawpaws] and resulted in a net profit over hand weeding of Rs?424/ha. Diuron at 2.0 kg was recommended for use in mangoes, bananas, pomegranates, custard apples [Annona reticulata], guavas, phalsa [Grewia subinaequalis] and Citrus and resulted in net profits over hand weeding of Rs?1360 in all fruits. Oxyfluorfen at 1.0 kg was recommended for use in grapes and resulted in a net profit over hand weeding of Rs?304.
