Changes in cytokinin levels in mango (Mangifera indica L.) leaf extracts following soil drenches with paclobutrazol.

Abstract : Nine-year-old cv. Alphonso trees treated with a soil drench of 2.5 g a.i. paclobutrazol/tree in Nov. 1987 showed reduced vegetative growth for 2 years. Butanol extraction of leaves, collected from these trees and from untreated, control trees in Feb. 1988, followed by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and soyabean hypocotyl bioassays, identified 8 cytokinin-like substances, x1 to x8. Four of these appeared to be zeatin riboside, zeatin, isopentenyl-adenosine and isopentenyl-adenine [2iP], respectively, and another 2 were cytokinin glucosides. In the butanol-insoluble fraction, a component was found which could be a cytokinin nucleotide and/or lupinic acid. Trees treated with paclobutrazol had lower activities of zeatin riboside, zeatin and cytokinin glucoside than control trees.
