Abstract : Non-pathogenic strains of F. moniliforme [Gibberella fujikuroi] isolated from maize and banana induced more mangiferin synthesis (a phytoalexin-like compound) by mangoes in vivo than a pathogenic isolate obtained from malformed mango shoots. The activity of the mangiferin degrading enzyme, polyphenoloxidase (PPO), of non-pathogenic strains of the fungus was greater than that of the pathogenic strain. In vitro tests also demonstrated the greater degradation of mangiferin by the non-pathogenic strains. The biochemical significance of the differential hypersensitive reaction in host species is discussed.
