Effect of sawdust and ammonium sulphate on the population of plant parasitic nematodes and plant growth.

Abstract : Sawdust of mango and ammonium sulfate significantly reduced populations of plant parasitic nematodes on carrot, radish, table beet, turnip, wheat and barley in microplot experiments. Where sawdust was used (containing 500, 1000 and 2000lbs carbon per acre) the nematode population consistently decreased with the increasing dose of carbon (C). The decrease in nematode population was further enhanced in the presence of ammonium sulfate (containing 100 lbs nitrogen per acre). Sawdust at all C levels increased yield which was further increased in the presence of nitrogen, except in turnip where higher doses of C were phytotoxic. The beneficial effects of the residues of the different treatments persisted in the linseed and okra crops which were sown in the following period.
