Growth promoting activities of mango shoot-tip lipid in different plant hormone bioassays.

Abstract : Shoot tips, 2 cm long, from 1-month-old shoots collected in Mar. 1979 were extracted in 80% methanol and then in chloroform-methanol (2:1 v/v) to give lipid-like substances, which were subjected to different bio-assays. In the oat coleoptile section straight growth test, the extract showed no growth-promoting activity and counteracted the growth effects of IAA. In the lettuce hypocotyl growth test, the lipid extract acted synergistically with GA3 at low concentrations but counteracted its activity at high concentrations. In the radish cotyledon growth test, the extract was more active than benzyladenine and interacted additively with it at lower concentrations. The mango shoot-tip lipid showed activities similar to gibberellins and cytokinins but different from auxins.
