Abstract : The article offers a study of the profitability and the evolution between 1970-90 of avocado plantations in the coastal areas of Andalusia, Spain, based on an analysis of cost structures for various types of plantations and profitability. The methodology used is described, figures are given, and the results are discussed. It is found that the area used for avocado growing in the region should stabilize at a level of 6000-6500 ha by the early 1990s. The future production of other fruits and vegetables, such as mangoes, is also discussed.
