Decay control in South African mangoes by flusilazol, penconazole and prochloraz during simulated shipment to Europe.

Abstract : When preceded by a warm water treatment (5 min dip in tap water at 40°C) flusilazole controlled soft brown rot caused by Hendersonia creberrima in Kent mangoes during simulated export by sea (3 weeks at 10° followed by ripening at 20°), but did not control anthracnose rot, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata]. Control of anthracnose rot was obtained when a flusilazole application (30 s dip in 1000 p.p.m. flusilazole) was preceded by a hot water treatment (5 min dip in tap water at 55°) but this treatment was phytotoxic. Good control of both diseases was achieved by dipping Kent mangoes in water at 40° for 5 min followed by a 30 s dip in 3000 p.p.m. flusilazole plus 1000 p.p.m. prochloraz. Good control of the 2 postharvest rots was obtained in Sensation mangoes when the hot water treatment was followed by an application of unheated penconazole and prochloraz, each at 1000 mg/litre, by dipping the fruit for 5 min in a mixture of penconazole (2000 mg/litre) and prochloraz (500 mg/litre) at temp. of 40°-50° or by a 30 s dip in unheated penconazole (6000-8000 mg/litre) plus prochloraz (2000 mg/ litre). The latter treatment resulted in poor colour development. Phytotoxicity resulted when Sensation mangoes were dipped for 5 min in 2500 mg/litre penconazole plus 1100 mg/litre prochloraz at temp. between 40° and 55°.
