Abstract : This enterprising and informative small book was published originally in German, in 1986, and the text has been adapted and translated into English by J. and E. Launert. It is aimed at the amateur grower and provides general and specific information on propagation, potting media, containers and cultural requirements (watering, light, heat and nutrition) of 70 selected tropical and subtropical plants under protected cultivation. The species, listed alphabetically under their botanical names, have all been grown with success by the author; some can be accommodated in a living room but the majority will require a heated greenhouse. In addition to many edible plants (e.g. mango, rice, turmeric and vanilla) they include industrial species such as cotton and sisal. All have ornamental value, even if the cultural conditions are not optimum for crop production.
