Abstract : In developing mango fruits the exocarp, mesocarp and endocarp are differentiated 14 days after anthesis. Initially the fruits grew by cell division, cell enlargement and an increase in the size and number of laticiferous canals in all 3 regions of the fruit. Cell division then ceased. Hardening of the endocarp started 64 days after anthesis in cv. Dashehari and slightly later in cv. Chausa. Variations in fruit size at maturity were shown to be chiefly due to differences in cell numbers and to a small extent to mean cell size. Ergastic substances, particularly starch, started to accumulate in the cells when they ceased to divide.
