Cytokinins and mango flower malformation. I. Tentative identification of the complement in healthy and malformed inflorescences.

Abstract : Tissue from malformed mango inflorescences contained higher levels of endogenous cytokinins than that from healthy inflorescences. The cytokinin complement extracted from malformed flowers was also different from that isolated from healthy flowers; the most obvious differences were the absence of trans-zeatin, dihydrozeatin and ribosyldihydrozeatin in malformed flowers. Isopentenyladenine (2iP) was not detected in healthy flowers but was present in malformed flowers. The possible involvement of the fungus Fusarium moniliforme [Gibberella fujikuroi] in flower malformation is discussed.
