Abstract : Studies were carried out on various crops (squash, sweet potato, citrus, mango, pawpaw and beans) in Cuba in 1981-84 to evaluate the effectiveness of different types of coloured traps (white, yellow, red, black and blue) and food attractants for capturing economically important insects. White was the most attractive colour to the pyralid Margaronia hyalinata [Diaphania hyalinata] on squash, while none of the colours was effective in sweet potatoes. In oranges and mangoes, yellow was the favoured colour for Dialeurodes and Frankliniella spp. Moericke yellow traps were effective for catching species of the cicadellid genus Empoasca on pawpaw and beans. Of the food attractants, a molasses-based formulation was the most effective for catching a species of the noctuid genus Mocis and Anastrepha suspensa.
