Lack of involvement of nutrients in the latency of Alternaria alternata in unripe mango fruits.

Abstract : The possible relation between changes in mango fruit composition during ripening and latency of A. alternata was investigated. The main increase in total soluble solids and decrease in acid content in ripening mango fruits occurred during the initial 13 d after harvest, while A. alternata symptoms appeared 18 d after harvest. Since the incubation period is 2 d, nutrient content did not seem responsible for activation of latent infection. Susceptibility of resistant peeled mango fruit flesh could not be increased by infiltration with sucrose at a concn which sustained the highest in vitro growth rate.
