Abstract : Bacterial infection in the cultivars Alphanso and Raspuri promoted phellogen activity and cork layers were formed in stem and petiole. Cork cell walls had a deposition of a lignin-like substance. The epidermis and cork layers burst open to form cracks. Bacterial invasion increased leaf thickness due to hypertrophy and hyperplasia. The xylem in the vascular bundle was partially plugged and the phloem disintegrated. In severely infected zones bacterial pockets were formed. Cell contents in the cankerous zone became brownish, structureless masses devoid of insoluble polysaccharides, cytoplasmic RNA and proteins.
