Abstract : The effect of high and low temperatures on dark respiration in greenhouse cultivated tropical (mango and pawpaw) and subtropical (Pachira insignis, Canarium oleosum, Terminalia catappa) species was investigated. The respiration rates determined manometrically were low in all species and increased with higher temperatures. Low temperature treatment (2-4 h at -5°C) accelerated the rate of respiration at 25°C except in mango and pawpaw. The critical and optimum temperatures for these species were determined. The respiratory behaviour is discussed with respect to original habitats and prevailing environmental conditions.
