  : xii + 698pp.

Abstract : This volume begins with two special essays, Plant breeding goals and strategies for the 1980s by N.E. Borlaug and The crown gall tumor problem: contributions to experimental oncology and genetics engineering by A.C. Braun. Ten chapters by various authors comprise the second part, which deals with basic and specialized techniques of cell culture: the subjects cover embryo culture, somaclonal and gametoclonal variation, cell selection for herbicide-resistant mutants, electrofusion of plant protoplasts for somatic hybrids, organelle transfer, Ti-plasmid transformation, techniques to overcome barriers to wide hybridization in cereals, production of secondary metabolites, immobilization of plant cells and cell layer technology. The last part of the book is concerned with individual crop species, as follows: barley, peas, Allium, carrots, aubergines, lettuces, capsicums, almonds, mangoes, aspens (principally Populus tremula, P. tremuloides and P. grandidentata) and sugar beet.
