Post harvest spoilage of mangoes by Penicillium cyclopium and its control by gamma-radiation and a fungicide.

Abstract : P. cyclopium was isolated from a spoiled ripe mango cv. Alphonso in India. Spores were found resistant up to 500 krad ?-radiation; thus the 25 krad treatment normally used to prolong shelf life of mangoes could not protect them against natural or artificial infection. Bavistin [carbendazim] completely inhibited spore germination at 100 mg/litre. A post-harvest dip (1 min) of unripe Langra mangoes in an aqueous solution of this fungicide considerably reduced the degree of spoilage.
