The mango hoppers and its control in Tripura.

Abstract : Amritodus atkinsoni, Idioscopus niveosparsus [Chunrocerus niveosparsus] and I. clypealis all attack mango in India and are all found in Tripura State, causing extensive damage to the foliage but suffering heavy mortality after the flowering season, possibly owing to a fungus that was observed sticking the dead leafhoppers to the lower surface of the leaves. In control tests, 5 insecticides were applied in 10 litres of spray fluid per tree and their relative effectiveness was determined. The lowest cicadellid populations (50.5% infestation) were observed after treatment with 0.03% dimethoate, the next most effective treatments being 0.07% phosalone, 0.05% fenitrothion, 0.07% endosulfan and 0.04% chlorpyrifos. Mixed cicadellid populations (including different genera or both adults and nymphs from overlapping generations) required 0.05% fenitrothion, while either this spray or 0.07% phosalone was suitable for the control of adults alone at the beginning of the oviposition period, and 0.03% dimethoate for nymphs alone. Idioscopus spp. were dominant and were best controlled with dimethoate or phosalone, while only phosalone was needed for the less abundant A. atkinsoni.
