Abstract : Studies are reported with mature fruits of the cv. Haden. The increase in NADP-malic enzyme activity, usually observed during ripening, was significantly diminished but not delayed by ?-irradiation with 0.75 kGy. Irradiated fruits showed higher total titratable acidity values and lower pH values, and had a smaller % physiological mass loss per day than did control fruits. These effects became more pronounced as ripening progressed. The respiratory pattern of irradiated fruits appeared to result from an initial stress response and a reduced, but not delayed, climacteric.
