Review of mango research and production in Fiji.

Abstract : The history of mango cultivation in Fiji is outlined and aspects of current production are discussed, including yield patterns, pests, diseases and marketing. Of over 40 cultivars and local selections evaluated, Haden, Gouveia, White Pirie, Momi K and Mapulehu are recommended for commercial production along with the currently planted Fiji, Peach, Jarra, Parrot and Kerosene. Vegetative propagation methods are described, the most successful of which were cleft and side-wedge grafts using an 8- to 12-cm-long scion of the same thickness as the rootstock (cv. Fiji). Grafting under 50% shade was successful in 60-95% of cases. Grafting in exposed conditions was less successful (from 1-69%).
