Interrelationship between vegetative growth and flowering in mango (Mangifera indica L.) cv. Banganapalli.

Abstract : New vegetative growth appeared during February to June and September to November in 1979. Shoots produced blossoms irrespective of the time of their emergence and cessation of growth in the previous year. Single and double flush shoots were the most fruitful; the majority of the triple flush shoots did not flower. When panicles were removed at the earlier stages of flower development (up to the panicle stage after flower opening), shoots resumed flowering from subapical buds and distal axillary buds, whereas at later stages (up to the stage of pebble-sized fruit) they produced vegetative growth from subapical and axillary buds. There was no initiation of vegetative growth in shoots defruited at the half-grown fruit stage. Tipped flowering and fruiting shoots initiated profuse vegetative growth from buds around the pruned portion and from lateral buds but growth decreased with an advancement in the stage of flowers and fruits removed. Flowering in the following year on deblossomed, defruited and tipped shoots was very poor. There was little difference in respect of flowering in the following 'on' year in shoots from which the October growth flush during the 'off' year was removed or pruned, compared with intact shoots. Defoliation and pruning of fruited shoots after harvest induced new vegetative growth abundantly early in the season. Such new shoots, however, failed to blossom normally in the succeeding 'off' year. Removing persistent peduncles on fruited shoots after fruit picking showed very little effect on induction of vegetative growth. None of the chemicals tried (KNO3, thiourea, GA3 and BA) was effective in inducing vegetative growth in fruited shoots after harvest. Sprays of KNO3 in September could not induce flowering in fruited shoots in the following 'off' year.
