Abstract : Mature mangoes (cv. Kensington) were airshipped from Darwin to Sydney or Singapore in single-layer fibreboard trays. The effect of 3 preshipment storage regimes and postharvest fungicide treatment was examined. Sensory attributes of ripe fruit were also evaluated by taste panels in Sydney and Singapore. The total postharvest life (TPHL) of mangoes was longest with preshipment storage for 5 days at 12 deg C, but the effective marketing time (TPHL less storage time) was only 4.5 days. Mangoes which were not stored (i.e. shipped on the day of harvest) had the longest effective marketing time of 7.8 days. Anthracnose [Glomerella cingulata] was present in ripe fruit but the overall severity was low. Postharvest fungicide treatment using hot benomyl resulted in a significant decrease in anthracnose infection. The taste panels awarded high scores for various external and internal sensory attributes.
