Studies on fruit bagging in Alphonso mango with PP non woven fabrics on yield and quality.

Abstract : The experiment was conducted at Mango Research Sub-Centre, Rameshwar, Tal. Deogad, Dist. Sindhudurg during 2012-13 fruiting season to study the influence of fruit covering at various stages of fruit development with PP non woven fabric on yield and quality of Alphoso mango. The bagging of mango fruits was done at marble and egg stages of fruit development. The bags were removed at 45, 60 and 75 days after bagging. The treated fruits were harvested at 85 per cent maturity stage. The bagging with Repol PP non woven fabric on Alphonso mango fruits exhibited the significant effect on maturity, fruit weight, percentage of spotted fruits due to pest or disease incidence and occurrence of spongy tissue. However, T.S.S. (°B) and incidence of stem end rot was not affected significantly. The retention of fruit was more in bagged fruits than control. The maximum days (103.67) required for maturity in the treatment bagging with PP non woven bags at marble stage and removing bags at 75 days after bagging where the harvesting was delayed by 16.34 days as compared to control. The maximum fruit weight (231.9 g) was also recorded in the same treatment. The percentage of spotted fruits was ranged between 6 to 12 per cent which was significantly less than the fruits where bagging was not done. The bagging improved fruits retention and fruit weight. It also reduced incidences of stem end rot, percentage of spotted fruits. The bagged fruits bears good luster and free from disease incidence, helped to increase higher market value.
