Abstract : Objective: In the Northern Province of Guinea-Bissau, the Tephritidae are major insects of mango. The Tephritidae attack the fruits by altering their nutritional qualities and marketability. The objective of this study is to test the efficacy of an agro-ecological system for sustainable management of mango fruit flies. Methodology and results: Forty-two traps made of Methyl eugenol and of Terpinyl acetate are placed on mango trees in nine orchards. The experimental design consisted of five treatments SUCCESS*Appat (GF-120, GF-120) + prophylaxis, prophylaxis and control A total of 4156 flies were trapped versus 2235 in the control plots. The results show a reduction of the infestation rate of 42% when the prophylaxis treatment is associated with GF-120 as compared to the control. Comparison of the infestation level in the experimental design shows that the best results are obtained with prophylaxis treatment associated with GF-120 (42%) followed by the treatments prophylaxis (35%) and GF-120 (19%). Conclusion and application: The results represent an important step toward understanding the fruit flies in Guinea-Bissau. It would be interesting to monitor the percentage of fruits attacked on early maturing varieties. The study showed that an agro-ecological management of fruit flies is possible. Methods such as prophylaxis are accessible to farmers and can be easily implemented. It should be noted that while the destruction of picked fruit is effective, it requires much time and labor, including land-fillings and black plastic trash bags (80×50 cm) that are easily torn.
