Studies on fruit dropping behaviors in ten commercial mango varieties.

Abstract : The study was carried out at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Chapai Nawabgonj, Bangladesh during the flowering and fruiting period February 2009 to September 2010 to observed the fruit drop and fruit set behaviors in ten mango (Mangifera indica L) varieties viz., BARI Mango-1, BARI Mango-2, BARI Mango-3, BARI Mango-4, Langra, Khirsapat, Gopalbhog, Fazli, Ashwina and Mollica. The flowering season majority of the varieties were during January-February months except BARI Mango-4, Langra, Fazli and Ashwina those varieties flowering during February-March months. Fruit drop occurred to the tune on 50% during the initial 20 days after fruit set and continued for 50 days. Maximum drop was noted in BARI Mango-4 (94.10%) followed by BARI Mango-3 (93.20%) which was statistically similar with Gopalbhog variety (93.06%) and the minimum (80.24%) recorded in Langra variety. The highest percentage of fruit retention (19.70%) was recorded in Langra variety followed by BARI Mango-2 (17.0%) and the lowest (5.90%) recording in BARI Mango-4 variety.
